The Very Basics of Astrology Signs
February 1, 2009 – 6:47 pmI have another post below that summarizes the 12 signs. But first, let’s look at a question.
When someone curiously asks you “Hey what’s your sign?” (and sure, this can be in a fun casual conversation, but why not at a bar too like the 1970s made famous!), what does that really mean? Because all the planets are always in a certain part of the sky. So all the planets in fact have a “sign”. From our view when we look up in the sky, the planets can be in different parts, so they can be in different signs. At any time, the Moon may be in Taurus. The Sun might be in Gemini. And Venus may be in Pisces. In total, there are twelve astrology signs used by everyone. And for those astronomers out there who like to go on about 13 signs, yes the astrologers know about this. There is a reason 12 signs are used. For right now we are sticking with the basics.

So when that guy or girl asks you that question, they are really wanting to know your SUN sign. One year equals the time the Earth goes fully around the Sun. So the Sun goes through all 12 signs in one year from our perspective on Earth. In astrology, the Sun symbolizes your core nature. It’s the source of all your vitality and energy and is your fundamental personal power. The way in which you express yourself - and how you express yourself - is totally filtered as a result of the sign the Sun is in the day you are born.
You’ll also be the happiest and feel the most balanced when you participate in activities and focus on goals and values in your life that reinforce your Sun sign. So you can see the importance of the Sun sign and why it’s become such a popular idea to understand!
And did you know there’s much more to astrology than just your birth chart? Professional astrologers advise people every day around the world by answering their questions. Helping to find a lost watch, finding the best time for a wedding, and even discovering the best places to live! Real and true astrology has been used for thousands of years by royalty and common folk alike. Why? Because it works!
In additional articles, you’ll learn more about the specific signs that the Sun (and all the planets) go through over time. Just like you have a favorite place you like to hang out and a place you’d rather avoid, the planets have signs they love and signs that they really don’t enjoy as much! And you’ll learn how to apply this knowledge to make things optimal for your experience in everyday life. All the planets in your chart have an important impact on your life. That’s why learning about astrology is so fascinating and enjoyable!
